The Social Security number (SSN) trace is an identifier and reveals any alias names, as well as past and present addresses associated with the social security number. It’s a crucial component of criminal history research, because it is used as a roadmap to select court jurisdictions that should be researched for criminal records. Another search can be done in the same courts for all relevant and/or unique alias names. The addresses found on a trace correspond with the areas of the country where your applicant has applied for credit or supplied their information to any number of our data furnishers. The trace also confirms that the social security number you provide is associated with yourself under the same name and the approximate date of issue aligns with your birth date.

Please Note: In the event that a social security number doesn’t trace, it does not automatically mean that the person is in this country illegally. In many instances, especially as it applies to younger people or those new to the country, but lawful residents, the lack of information can mean that the person has not established credit in their name. It is a common misconception that a Social Security Trace is conducted through the Social Security Administration and can be used to determine a person’s legal status in this country. This assumption is incorrect as neither an employer, nor a screening provider is not eligible to query the Social Security Administration until the person becomes an employee. The E-Verify – Legal Residency Verification should be utilized to verify if the social security number is the candidate’s.

Don’t worry that’s why we’re here!  There are more than 3,000 counties in the United States, and they all have one thing in commonpeople. And as you know, people can make mistakes. There can be clerical errors, inaccurate, incomplete information, and records can come up that match your name but aren’t you. This is all commonplace with public records. You may be able to get that information corrected or removed. WorkPast has an easy dispute process and support team that is here to help you sort it all out quickly.

Depending on the type of background check ordered, turnaround times range from a few hours to a few days. Our basic checks search national criminal databases quickly, and the results are nearly instant. Other checks take longer.

Some records are housed in county courthouses and some have been digitized and are held in databases. Records will show up on your background check depending on the type of search you run, and where the records are housed.

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and specific state laws, some offenses can’t legally be shown in background check results and/or can’t be taken into consideration in your hiring process. Many states have their own laws governing the employer’s responsibility in considering these records, and most limit criminal and civil records to seven years, so WorkPast reports seven years worth of data on your personal background check.

In addition to limiting the search to seven years, WorkPast displays only the records that match your identifiers like first name, last name, date of birth, middle name, address, etc.  We do not include any records that do not match at least three of your personal identifiers. But there are thousands of other background checking companies out there, and we cannot guarantee that other background checking companies are as precise as we are. This is why WorkPast exists. Our goal is to give you control over your background check, help you see what is on your background check, and help make sure that accurate information is used during your hiring process. Know your rights. Take control of your information. If an incident in your past does not show up on our background check and it is within the past seven years, please consider expanding your search to include county courthouse searches or contact us for further assistance.

No, running a background check will never affect your credit score.
